We are happy to announce our next Seattle area workshop with Frank Covino.
Learn the secrets of the Old Masters in this week long workshop.
What You’ll Learn
If you have always wanted to paint like the Old Masters – Rembrandt, Vermeer, Titian, Michelangelo, Leighton, Waterhouse – but didn’t know where to start, consider a workshop with Frank Covino.
Frank Covino teaches the Classical Academic painting method, which is broken down into several steps. To best learn these techniques, Frank asks each student to do one (or more) Old Master reproductions before moving on to their own compositions. Here is a brief description of the steps.
- The drawing – Students are taught a unique graph system which allows students to draw from a reference photo onto their canvas. There is no tracing – all the drawing is done freehand with the guidance of the graph and Frank. No previous drawing experience is required. Frank teaches new and advanced students alike.
- The Controlled Palette – Once the drawing is complete, Frank explains how to use his unique Controlled Palette to successfully mix values in preparation for painting.
- Verdaccio Underpainting – A grey-green monochrome underpainting, called verdaccio is painted over the top of the drawing.
- Preparation of a flesh-tone palette – Frank discusses the various types of flesh tones and how to achieve success in matching them using several approaches, all using his controlled palette.
- Glazing and Flesh Tones – Frank walks each student through the process of painting with tinted oils as well as painting the flesh tones.
As well as learning the steps of the Classical Academic painting method, Frank also discusses the following topics in depth throughout the course of the week:
- The History of Art, the Classical Academic method and the lives of the Old Masters
- How-to topics such as keeping your paint fresh, types of mediums to use (and not use), brush selection, canvas preparation and much more
- Creating depth in a painting using gesso as well as other advanced painting techniques
Frank spends time with each student individually throughout the day, helping solve particular problems. Other students are encouraged to watch and listen if that particular discussion applies to them.
Here is a glimpse at what a Frank Covino workshop is like.
Who Should Take this Workshop?
- Beginners are encouraged – no prior drawing or painting experience is required. Frank will explain the fundamentals of drawing and with the help of an ingenious grid system have you faithfully reproducing an Old Master painting in the first day.
- Current art students will find that one workshop with Frank is worth a year or more of traditional art classes.
- Experienced artists will gain a wealth of knowledge in the advanced techniques and in the deep knowledge that Frank has about all aspects of Oil Painting and the history of Art.
